Encouragement can have a very powerful effect on bosses and co-workers. The literal meaning of the word, encourage, is to put heart into. When this definition is applied to work situations, it suggests:

  • Stirring, inspiring and motivating bosses and co-workers with hope, courage and confidence.
  • Giving team members a vote of confidence.
  • Boosting morale by expressing approval and offering support to others in the office.
  • Lifting people up and moving them to do the things they need to do to achieve company and career objectives.
  • Empowering direct reports and peers to grow professionally and reach their full potential.
  • Stimulating cooperation and collaboration between work units, departments or the company as a whole.

Encouragement & Failure

Everyone needs encouragement. Bosses and co-workers alike face difficult situations and make mistakes or fail on a daily basis. They need help to cope with disappointment, fear, doubt and uncertainty. It has been said, “A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success” (Anonymous).

Even if people act tough—as if they are successfully handling the overwhelming emotions that accompany a mistake, don’t believe it! Somewhere deep inside, they are awash in despair with intense feelings of fear about having made yet another blunder or slip-up.

What they desperately need is someone like you to come alongside them and encourage them for trying even in the face of failure…someone who really cares about them…who accepts and acknowledges them by helping to keep their self-esteem intact in spite of the failure.

Put Heart into Others at Work

  2. Deliberately look for small ways to encourage others verbally, in writing or through your own behavior towards them.
  3. Act as a cheerleader or a fan club member for a co-worker or boss. Tell them, “I know you can do this…”
  4. Reassure team members after a disappointment or setback.
  5. Prompt your direct reports and peers to try new things or pursue new opportunities.
  6. Offer to help co-workers recover from a disappointment or failure. Give them a shoulder to cry upon when appropriate.
  7. Value and accept your co-workers as they are and don’t put conditions on accepting them.
  8. Help others in the office to believe in themselves. Point out their positive character traits and how these can lead to success in the future.
  9. Recognize the efforts and improvements co-workers make especially after a mistake.
  10. Show appreciation for the contributions of every team member in your office.

1. The Pledge By Clyde Dennis
You know kids, one of the things I've learned by letting more people know what's going on inside my head is that once you do people expect you to live up to what you've put out there. I've sort of learned on the fly here that using this knowledge as a burr under the saddle that is my life accelerates my growth. Where I used to piddle (piddle's a FUN word to say...) around on things that I was working on internally and hadn't publicly disclos…

2. Teacher's Pet By Wayne Mitchell
Direct Answers - Column for the week of October 20, 2003I am 32 and a mom with two children. I've pretty much been single for two years. My problem is I found myself falling for my son's teacher. I never saw a ring on his finger, so last school year I made every attempt to visit my son's school as often as I could.Eventually I took the chicken's way out and e-mailed this man and told him how I felt. He replied that he was flattered, we can …

4. Can A Patch Of Faith Make Miracles Happen? By Arthur Levine
Have you ever wondered how miracles happen? To my way of thinking they are an act of God.Maybe if we have enough faith in God, we could help the miracle of his grace and kindness redound to our benefit. Maybe through faith, in our own small way, we could help make God’s miracles happen.Sometimes it’s hard to have faith in what we cannot see or understand. That’s why I have used my imagination to create a patch of faith. I use it to symbolize my…
